For a destination race this year, XC Chelsea Masters has chosen the Bretton Woods Ski Marathon that is being held on Saturday March 7th. On Sunday, March 8th there will be a smaller skate race also held at Bretton Woods.
The Bretton Woods Ski Marathon is held at the renowned Bretton Woods Mount Washington Hotel in New Hampshire and the classic only event offers distances of 21 and 42kms. There is a timed and untimed (touring) option for both distances. The race draws a field of over 300 competitive collegiate racers, avid Masters racers and recreational skiers.
The race is based out of the Bretton Woods Nordic Center, one of the largest cross country areas in the Eastern US. The 100-km trail network crosses open fields, meanders through woods of spruce and fir, passes beaver ponds and mountain streams, and traverses open hardwood stands on trails painstakingly prepared with state of the art groomers. The facilities include a clubhouse that is open to race participants, with availability of lockers and showers, as well as a well-stocked ski shop. In past years a Swix Retail Blow Out Sale has been held in conjunction with the event, so prepare for some great deals on clothing, hats and gloves!
Registration for the event includes a post-race meal (pasta buffet) and awards ceremony in the banquet hall of the beautiful Bretton Woods Mount Washington Hotel. There are also great draw prizes for participants.
The organizers are excited about the prospect of XCCM coming down and will provide us with a banquet table if we are a minimum of eight people.
On the Sunday, the Mount Washington Cup Skate Race (10 KM) is taking place at the same location.
